Vuka – What Went Down…

02nd November 2008, in Photo Projects (16 Comments)

It’s really strange seeing something you worked on all over the place – some people are calling it the Zain Drain, which I found funny. Ahem.

Vuka - from Zain

For the people who’ve asked me where I shot the Vuka ad, I guess this qualifies as a look behind the-scenes. Below are the shots we took in the studio (the models tried hard to hide their confusion – imaginary walls?)

Then some mad compositing (putting the wall and ground in) and cutouts (removing the white backgrounds) by the good people at ZK, I just did the coloring and the sky. I like that sky…

Congrats man, I haven’t seen the spots yet, but I have heard about the effectiveness of the ads. (Brandkemistry blog)
Kudos!

The Zain drain… draining subscribers from ‘pain/suffericom’ and other networks. The ad u created was the beginning of the mass exodus to the wonderful world. Your work is impeccable and am a big fan.

I remember seeing the first ads for zain..all i could think about was their logo.

It was like a nightmare for me, having to live in westlands and go to church on ngong road…the zain logo became a prime fraction of my not-so-interesting life’s eye. I was devastated and envisioned a world taken over by the little black rounded rectangle with a cyan-magenta whirlpool and titled with that arabic-style typeface that we all love (barf).
I was in a daze, looking at those solid colour street light (adopt-a-light) ads they finally brought up in their not so rigorous campaign to usurp the giant safaricom. I tried to shrug it off, but it just wasnt working. I prayed for deliverance.

The first time i saw the vuka ad, i didnt pay attention to the brand. I Just stared at the composition. And kept on driving. I saw it again a day later, and then finally, a day later, it hit me that it was a zain ad. Shock! I didnt even pay attention to the promotion. I still dont! I have a safcom line, still going strong (those guys have me in a chokehold..i have no idea what voodoo this is). But its always a pleasure to see good photography in an ad. I have to admit…the guy who’s jumping looks too close to the wall to be jumping from it..but maybe its just me.

At the end opf the day the only thought for me was “at least they have good photography now.”

Once again, your work is great and your lucky self got to enjoy working with a producer. That must be an industry first. I’d love to hear about the process behind the storyboard. Did you have one? Did you sketch it out yourself? Was it part of the pitch or did you show up and take pictures like you were told to? And your experience working with kenyan models.

Am not very interested in Zain as a product or a brand as a whole, infact Am still on Safcom but when I saw that AD and judging by the composition I knew it had the touch of a genius who’s brewing a quiet creative storm somewhere. It could only be YOU.
